You have a Bachelor’s degree from a university outside of Canada and you’re hoping to do a Master’s degree in the PMEAL group

The University of Waterloo no longer offers a guaranteed differential tuition waiver for international Master’s students.  As such, your tuition cost would be unreasonably high and I am not comfortable putting somebody into that situation.  There are other universities in Canada and elsewhere that do offer fee relief, so I suggest you search for these schools.

You have a Master’s degree from a university outside of Canada and you’re hoping to earn a PhD degree in the PMEAL group

Professors receive a large number of emails from aspiring PhD applicants from overseas.  I receive at least 10 per week, and this can approach 20-50 per week in the period leading up to the application deadlines.  I hire 1-2 PhD students each year.  The statistics are clear.

The rate limiting factor is research funding. In order to pay a student’s stipend I must apply for and receive grant money from various government agencies and industry partners. When I say I don’t have any positions, I do not mean that I have enough students and don’t feel like hiring more.  I mean that I have no funding available to pay people, no matter how terrific they may be.

As a corollary to the above point, if you happen to have a scholarship from your home country the I can almost certainly devise an exciting and fruitful PhD project for you to work on. Please indicate this fact in the subject line of your emails so I don’t miss it.

On the other hand, being ‘self funded’ does not count as a scholarship, and I am not comfortable asking you to spend $100k of your family’s money to for the ‘privilege’ of doing a PhD with me.

You are an undergraduate student from a university outside of Canada and you’re hoping to do an internship in the PMEAL group

The University of Waterloo has a cooperative education program for our undergraduate students, and these students are available to work in our labs as interns on their co-op terms.  It doesn’t make sense to fly a student halfway across the planet at great expense when there are great local students available.

You are a PhD candidate at a university outside of Canada and you wish to visit the PMEAL group to satisfy an internship requirement of your PhD program

I am always interested in collaborating with bright and motivated students from other research labs, and I will happily arrange an internship.  I would only ask that you have a specific research plan and objectives you wish to achieve before coming.
